Getting More Website Traffic With On-Page Optimization
Getting More Website Traffic With On-Page Optimization
By Scott Brooks
Whether you are attempting to get a press release, article or web page ranked high in the search engines, it is important to optimize it correctly. There are two primary types of optimization. They include on-page and off-page optimization. Off-page optimization primarily consists of getting quality incoming links to your website. On-page optimization involves making sure that your meta tags, titles and text include the keyword(s) or phrase(es) that you are looking to get ranked for. We will be bein by discussing the importance of meta, title and description tags and then we will move on to other on-page optimization tips.
Meta, title and description tags don’t have as much weight in the search engines that they used to. At one time, if you included your keywords in these tags, you could almost guarantee that your web page would soar in the search engines. Internet marketers quickly caught on and begin stuffing these tags with these keywords. To re-gain control, Google changed their search althorithms. Today, while including your keywords in these tags won’t necessarily cause you to rank highly in the search engines, filling them out certainly does not hurt. They let the search engines know exactly what your website is about. If your text and perhaps your domain name uses the same or similar keywords, you have increased your chances of getting ranked for your desired keywords.
Another important piece of the on-page optimization puzzle is using your keywords in text of your website, article or press release. Now don’t go crazy here. Keyword stuffing hasn’t been effective for a while. It can actually get you penalized in the search engines. Instead, use your keyword(s) no more then once every one hundred words or so and be sure to spread it out throughout the text. Be sure to also use related words. The search engine spiders might be suspicious if they see the same keyword or keyword phrase 50 times in one article. It is very easy to type in your keyword on the bottom of the page that many times. It is a little more difficult to use it throughout the page if it’s not on topic of your website. For example, if your website is about dog training, and the phrase dog training appeared 30 times in the article, this might raise flags if this phrase is the only mention of dogs. However, if related words such as puppy training, dog collars, dog leashes or small dog training also appear, it supports the notion that the website, article or press release is really about dog training. This will help you in the search engines.
Choosing a relevant domain name is also very helpful. Again, if you are selling a dog training program, having a domain name that reads dogtraininginfo.com will give credence to the fact that your website is actually about dog training. Some people will attempt to spam the search engines and get ranked for terms that have nothing to do with the information on their website. Using related terms and having an on-topic domain name provides uniformity and “proves” to the search engines that your website covers one specific topic.
