Optimising for Search Engine Marketing ( SEM )

So within the scope of SEM one would find technologies or methodologies such as keyword research, keyword auctioning or purchasing, Keyword optimisation, Pay per Click advertising, Meta tagging, and meta keywords, SE Submission and more.
Where does it all start?
Search Engine Marketing is one of the many ways of attracting qualified visitors to your site. To implement a successful SEM campaign, one needs to understand crawlers. Web Crawlers are software robots designed and deployed to crawl the web by engines such as Google or Yahoo. They roam the internet and delve into pages that are hosted on all the websites. These pages and websites are then listed on the engines. Ranking of websites and page placement on the search engines is based on algorithms that place weightings on various page elements, such as content, the keyword density , back-links to name a few. These algorithms vary from Engine to Engine. To achieve good rankings one has to optimise such pages so that the SE algorithms place the site high on the relevancy scale and hence obtain good page ranking. In many cases one would optimise each page separately for each Engine. In paid submission one would pay the SE to review and place the site. This is a manual process.
Alternatively one can buy keywords through negotiation or auctions for words which are related to your website content or subject. Such keywords are normally well researched and a good SEM will be able to help you find the most used keyword, to find the subjects that relate to your website. The SE based on auctioned keywords will also list the site advertised within the search listing or as a separate page feature or ads. Google calls this technology adsense or adwords. Clicks may also be a part of the PPC campaign.
