Ramp Up Your Keyword Marketing by Picking the Best Kind of Keywords

First of all, make sure you find good keywords by actually DOING keyword research. If you don’t, then the majority of your marketing material is a waste of your time. Think about it this way… how will people find your website on the internet?

People type keywords into search engines such as Google. Keywords don’t have to be a single word, such as “shoe”. A keyword phrase, such as “best hiking shoe”, is also called a keyword.

The search results for that keyword is simply a list of individual web pages that Google deems significant to your typed keyword. The more significant the web page, the higher up the web page is listed, or “ranked”.

So, a keyword like “shoe” is very broad, and probably not the best choice for a keyword, unless your site sells every shoe under the planet. But even then, “shoe” could include anything related to shoes… shoe repair, shoe shining, shoe manufacturing, you name it.

For more targeted traffic and qualified, make sure you use longer keywords that include 3 to 5 words. Not only will your traffic be more targeted, meaning the right type of prospect, but the search engines will rank you higher.

Google likes it when keywords are relevant to the content of the web page. The more relevant the more significant the web site in Google’s eyes. So for example, if you write an article on “The 5 Best Shoe Shining Tips”, you would want to use keywords that have to do with shoe shining, such as “shoe shining tips”, or shoe shining tips for leather”.

And don’t guess on what keywords to use! That’s the biggest mistake you can make. Let the tools tell you what keywords to choose for your marketing material and optimization efforts. I say this, because the tools actually TELL you what is currently being searched.

What ARE the actually keywords that people type into search engines, and how frequently. They also tell you how much competition there is for the keywords. Competition meaning, how many web pages are competing for the high ranking on those keywords in their keyword marketing.
